4 Tips to SEO Your Twitter & Facebook Efforts

If you haven’t heard (and I say this facetiously), Twitter has struck deals with both Google and Bing to deliver tweets in search results, and Facebook has struck a similar deal with Bing, with Google likely not far behind. This has major implications for getting your business noticed by customers when they search online.

That said, if you aren’t already connected to social media, you had best jump on the train. If you don’t you’ll be missing out on some incredible opportunities to connect with your customers. To help you get moving, here are some tips to help your Twitter and Facebook messages show up in search results.

1.) Don’t wait for everybody else

Using well-crafted posts, get out there right away and start tweeting and building your Facebook brand. The Twitter posts, at the least, will apparently have your follower count and length of time on the medium factored in to their appearance in search results. The sooner you get started, the more likely you are to gain followers and the  more likely you are to show up on Google or Bing when someone searches for something you are trying to target.

2.) Use keywords

This goes back to the “well-crafted” comment in the first paragraph. If you want to appear in search results, you need to identify, target and use the the keywords most important to your business, just as you would with regular search engine optimization. Don’t go and get all spammy with it though. Your messaging should be focused and valuable to the people who might search for it. Keyword abuse has never been looked upon fondly by search engines.

3.) Make sure your Twitter and Facebook messages are unique

Don’t cross-post your messages on Facebook and Twitter. This may fly in the face of what you’re used to and is what many people currently do, as it is easier to manage multiple accounts this way, however if you want to make a bigger splash on the search engines, it is always better to take your keyword-focused content and craft a message specific to both platforms. This increases your chances of being noticed amidst all of the other chatter that may be using keywords you are targeting, and decreases the chances of your post being filtered as duplicate content. In any case, you are going to get more traction on Twitter and Facebook if you foster a unique community environment on each.

4.) Include links

A link indicates more information on a subject. Including a link in your tweet or update on Facebook will not only give your content more value, but if the link sends someone back to your website you are increasing your incoming links and overall potential for traffic.

The most important thing you can do is get involved. Whether you like change or not, embrace new tech or not, these mediums are not going away, they are growing. You need to get your brand involved as soon as possible to maximize your potential for growth.
